Dowell 22 Jun 1951 - On Thursday, June 14, at 11:45 p.m., William M. Dowell, a well-known and admired citizen of Sabine parish, passed away at his home in the Pleasant Hill community after a long period of illness. Deceased was born in Harrisson, Ark., Oct. 8, 1863, of the parents Mr. and Mrs. James Dowell and was the eldest son of six children. His early boyhood and manhood was spent in that community. After graduation from the academy, he attended Peabody college of the University of Nashville, Tenn. He received his Bachelor of arts and science degrees there in 1893. On August 27, 1896, he was married to Mary Sparks in her home at Gaither, Ark. To this union there were eight children born. he began his teaching career of 25 years there, later moving to Texas, and Louisiana where he had lived most of his married life, residing in the Pleasant Hill community as both a teacher and farmer for the past 38 years. During this time he served a term as Sabine parish school Board member, retiring from civic life soon after because of ill health. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Dowell home, Friday, June 15, after which he was interred at the Spring Ridge cemetery under the auspices of Drewitt funeral home of Mansfield. Revs. N. P. Plunkett of Mansfield and R. H. Brown and J. C. Salley of Pleasant Hill conducted the burial ceremonies. The pallbearers were Harvey Phillips, DeWitt Jackson, Ernest Copeland, Bruce McCullough, Coleman Cobbs and Norman Waddle. Besides his many thoughtful and kind friends Mr. Dowell is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Dowell, six living children and families, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Phillips and Dorothy of Opelousas, Mr. and Mrs. James R. Dowell, Jr., of Little Rock, Ark., Miss Jewell Dowell of Pleasant Hill, Mr. and Mrs. DeWitt Jackson of Pleasant Hill, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Copeland of Raceland, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McCullough, Sr, Janelle, Bruce, Jr., and Thomas of Mansfield; a brother, Lewis Dowell, Harrison, Ark.; a sister, Mrs. Lura Brisco, of Tulsa, Okla.
