Killed in the collision was John Phillip Durr, a passenger in a car driven by 22 year old Dempsey Hillard, also of Pleasant Hill. The third person in the car was Richard Evans, 21, of Converse. Durr was pronounced dead at the scene. Hillard and Evans were both taken to Schumpert Hospital, where Hillard was listed in satisfactory condition, and Evans underwent surgery, and was listed in guarded condition. According to patrolman J. D. McEachern, Hillard said that he was headed south on the Mansfield Road, came to the crossing, and did not see the train, nor any signal lights working. The engineer told police that he saw the car about 50 feet from the crossing, and that the auto's headlights seemed to dip, as if trying to stop, and then attempted to cross the tracks ahead of the eight car train. The body was taken to Wellman's Funeral Home in Shreveport, and was later transferred to Warren Meadows Funeral Home.
