J. Derrick 19 Nov 1943 - Last rites for Sherriff D. J. Derrick, age 50 years, were held Tuesday evening at four o'clock at Union Springs church near Converse. Rev. R. T. Pynes, pastor of the Many Methodist church, officiated. Burial was in Converse cemetery with Masonic rites at the grave, Dennis-Green funeral home in charge of funeral. Active pallbearers were: L. E. Harper, J. L. McDaniel, W. E. Curtis, Robert B. Jackson, D. H. Skinner and W. H. Brumley. Surviving are six sons, D. J. Derrick, Jr., U.S. army in New Jersey, George Derrick, marine corps, overseas; Huey, Harold, Billy and Leonard of Many; two daughters, Mrs. Joe Stagg of Port Arthur, Texas, and Miss Alma of Many; two brothers, L. H. and C. A. Derrick of Converse; five sisters, Mrs. E. M. Scott, Slanton, Texas, Mrs. F. G. Lorenz, Mrs. L. V. McDonald of Port Arthur, Texas, Mrs. J. W. Miller of Norphlet, Ark., and Mrs. J. P. Simmons of Mansfield. Sheriff Derrick was killed instantly in an auto wreck near Montgomery about nine o'clock Saturday night in a collision involving his car and two trucks on highway 71. He was enroute to Baton Rouge on business. Derrick was elected Sheriff of Sabine parish in 1936, was re-elected in 1940 and had started his campaign for re-election this year. He was born and reared near Converse where he made his home until elected Sheriff when he moved to Many, the parish seat. He was a member of the police jury from ward six a number of years. He was a member of the Masonic lodge of Mitchell.
