Mr. Davis was born at Gallatin, Tennesse, and had been a resident of Sabine parish for nearly 50 years, having settled here in 1843 about the time of the formation of the parish. He followed his trade of carpenter for three years, and in 1846 married Miss Maria E. Buvens, and then began farming and followed it successfully until his death. He was converted to the Catholic church soon after his coming to this parish and until the time of his death was one of her most faithful and cherished members. He served as Recorder of Sabine parish for a number of years and made an efficient officer. He was ever a friend to the needy and no one in any station of life could say aught against him. The Catholic church and school here are silent witnesses to his charity and generosity. He leaves an aged and loving wife, three sons and one daughter to mourn his loss to whom he was ever a kind and loving father. And his numerous relatives and host of friends pay tribute to his memory. The BANNER extends its deepest sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends. A true man in every respect, let his epitaph be: True to his God, true to his country and true to his friends.
