She was 93 years old. Juanita, or “Punk” as her siblings called her, was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Fore Salter and Lula Isabelle Miller Salter; her brothers and sisters, Leon Darby Salter, Ernest Edward Salter, Frank Elton Salter, Devonia Salter Willard, Ruth Salter LaCour Tompkins, Leona Salter Wright, Norman Salter, Georgia Salter Gardner, James Kirk Salter, Thelma Salter Davenport, Exa Salter Diebel, Betty Lou Salter Manenaand Jim Salter and her adoring husband of 35 years, Eustace Louis Edwards, Jr. Juanita was born on a farm outside of Negreet on Jan. 17, 1922. She graduated from Negreet High School, then obtained her nursing degree from Shreveport Charity Hospital before bravely embarking on adventures in Philadelphia, New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles for additional nursing training and education for several years. Despite her time exploring many of the largest cities in the United States, she was a small town girl at heart and returned to Many, where she met her husband, Eustace, and settled down. Juanita’s passion was her family. Her husband, parents, siblings and their families, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all benefitted greatly from her loving care and affection. Over the years, Juanita enjoyed playing golf and bridge with dear friends and family, and in recent years picked up the sport of beanbag baseball. She was a beloved and respected member of the First Baptist Church in Many as well as the devoted head of the Many Cemetery committee. She spent countless hours working to raise money for cemetery maintenance, and worked at everything from repairing sprinklers to pulling weeds and wiping off headstones of the departed souls on Capitol Street. No job was too big or too small when it came to caring for the cemetery. Dressed in her colorful, impeccably ironed button-down shirts and capri-pants and sporting her signature red lipstick, Juanita taught us that the wild concrete jungles of the big cities are no match for Louisiana farm girls; ice cream sandwiches cure any ailment from skinned knees to hurt feelings; a woman should never leave the house without makeup on her face and ample stocks of lipstick, butterscotch candy, Clorets gum, and Kleenex; elegance and toil are not mutually exclusive; whacking multiple water moccasin snakes (or “snecks” as she called them) in half with a hoe, mowing the lawn, clearing the flower beds, reading a book, and preparing a brisket dinner and all the fixin’s are all in a day’s work; homemade satin pillowcases provide comfort through any and all of life’s transitions; if momma says “no,” ask Nannie; nursing is more than a job, it’s a lifetime commitment to caring for others, anticipating their needs, and treating their pains with selfless and loving devotion; family is about love, support, laughter, good food, hard work, squabbles, disagreements, and never giving up on each other. She will be profoundly missed by her children, Eustace Louis (Tripp) Edwards, III and his wife, Diane McComic Edwards, and Betty Edwards Hunt and her husband, Eugene Pitts Hunt, III; her beloved grandchildren, Stacey Edwards Piserchio, Jonathan Louis Edwards, Mary Edwards Sundborg, Lauren Hunt Krauss, Lindsey Hunt Detwiler, Leslie Elizabeth Hunt and their spouses and her five greatgrandchildren as well as her brother-in-law, William F. Edwards and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. On Saturday, Jan. 31, Juanita was laid to rest beside her husband in Many Cemetery where she poured her blood, sweat, and tears for so many years. Peace at last! Services were at the First Baptist Church of Many. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Many Cemetery Fund or Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport. The family extends special thanks to Juanita’s longtime physician, Dr. Alan J. Borne, the nursing staff at the Stiles Apartments at The Glen, and her loving caregivers, Meoshia Fair, Johnetta Perkins and Holly Ashley.
