Gewin, age 72 years, were held last Friday from Spring Ridge with Rev. Mrs. Ada Slaton of Mansfield officiating. Interment in the Belmont cemetery. Dennis-Green funeral home of Many directing. Surviving: sisters, Mrs. Lydia Minton of San Augustine, Texas; brother, B. Pickard of Albany, Texas; three sons, G. C., W. H. and M. B. Gewin, 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Dyess, Clifton Free and Roy Middleton. ***************************************************************** Obituaries: Mrs. Newt Morrison, Sabine, Vernon Parish M-625 Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Feb 14, 1941 Submitted by: Tammy Larche-Smith tammy@cp-tel.net The Sabine Index - Mrs. Newt Morrison 14 Feb 1941 - Mrs. Newt Morrison, 55 years passed away Monday morning at her home near Hornbeck after a short illness. Funeral services were held at Good Hope church Tuesday directed by the Dennis funeral home. The services were conducted by Rev. Martin of Anacoco and Rev. McCloud of Leesville. Mrs. Morrison was reared in Vernon parish and had spend all of her life there. She was a member of the Good Hope Baptist church all of her church life, also attended the public schools in this church building in her early childhood. She and Newt Morrison were married in 1906 and have lived in the same community all of these years. They have been blessed in all these years with health and this short sickness came as a hard blow to Mr. Morrison and all who knew Mr. Morrison. Mrs. Morrison is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Inez Beckom and one son, Try Morrison, both of Hornbeck; two brothers, T. J. Farris and Ivey Farris of Anacoco; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ferrell and Mrs. Charley Robinson, both of Anacoco, and a host of relatives and friends. **************************************************************** Obituaries: Mrs. D. Peterson 21 Feb 1941 - Notice was received by Mrs. D. F. Peterson that her brother Wayne Pearce was killed by a freight train in Redding, California, Feb. 11. No particulars other than the body being badly mangled was buried in Redding, California. Surviving are five brothers, S. J. of Shreveport, Fred and Douglas of Redding, Calif., M. G. of Zwolle and W. Hester of the Nazarene church, conducted funeral services for O. L. Pynes last Monday afternoon, from the Smith Funeral Home. Mr. Pynes died at Valley View hospital last Saturday, February 15, after an illness of some four weeks. Ollie Pynes was born in Maryanna, Florida, February 6, 1879, and made that place his home until he was 14, when the family moved to Sabine Parish, Louisiana. He was married to Effie May Sanders on May 8, 1898, at Florien, Louisiana. The family moved to Arizona in 1924, and came to this community in 1934, where they had since resided. Mr. Pynes was an employee of the Edward Hines Lumber company. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. O. F. Presley; four sons, Sam, Ed, Ray, and Roy Pynes. There are also 12 grandchildren who survive him. All live in this community. Music was provided for the funeral service by a quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Eby, and Mr. and Mrs. George McUne. A duet was also rendered by Mrs. Eby, and Mrs. McUne. The active pallbearers were Jim Myers, Webb Freeman, Roy Bunyard, R. P. Lane, D. M. Parker, and A. D. Elliott. Honorary pallbearers were A. Lige Jennings officiating. Funeral directed by Dennis-Green. Interment in Spring Ridge cemetery. Surviving are one brother, S. B. Cranford, of Arkansas; one sister, Rhoda Smith, and an adopted daughter, Mildred Coon of Kansas City, Mo., eight nieces and seven nephews. Mrs. Rains made her home with a great-nephew, H. E. Rowe of Pleasant Hill. **************************************************************** Obituaries: Salem Rayburn, Sabine, Vernon Parish R-165 Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Feb 7, 1941 Submitted by: Tammy Larche-Smith tammy@cp-tel.net The Sabine Index - Salem Rayburn 7 Feb 1941 - Salem Rayburn passed away in the Charity hospital at Shreveport on the morning of January 31 at 5:45 a.m. and was buried in the Self graveyard near Hornbeck February 1. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Gray, Pastor of the Methodist church of Hornbeck, assisted by Rev. H. E. Chance and others. Mr. Rayburn was one of the best citizens of his community, quiet, thoughtful and willing to help carry on in his church and community and do his part well. He desired to do the right thing by all with whom he came in contact. He was born in Louisiana but had lived in western Texas, New Mexico and Arizona when a young man but returned and made his home near Hornbeck. It is said of him that he was a mighty good man and those who knew him best knew that to be so. Our country needs more men like he was. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Pearl Davis of Hornbeck; one son, Grove Rayburn of Hornbeck and five brothers, W. H. and Steve Rayburn of Hornbeck, Oal and Jahn Rayburn of Albuquerque, N. Smith, wife of Henry W. Smith of Florien, died in Fraser sanitarum, Many, Monday, February 17. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith is survived by one son, Richard S. Smith; three daughters, Sara Beth, Lella and Ailene Smith; one sister, Mrs. J. T. Morgan of High Point, N. C.; five brothers, C. C. Horney of Farmer, N. C., W. A., J. E., J. U. and T. R. Horney of High Point, N. C. Before her marriage in 1914, Mrs. Smith was a successful teacher in the public school system of North Carolina. Since that time she has been a devoted wife, mother and fried, having been able to gain friends in every community in which she lived. Mrs. Smith was a loyal member of the Methodist church and has always taken a sincere interest in church and Sunday school work. At the time of her death she was president of the Womens Society of Christian Service of Prospect Methodist church and teacher of the junior class of Prospect Sunday school. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. D. Gray, assisted by Rev. R. T. Pynes, Rev. C. W. Williams, and Rev. J. D. Scott, with arrangements being handled by Dennis-Green funeral home. The floral offering was beautiful and expressive of the esteem in which Mrs. Smith was held. The body was laid to rest in Fort Jesup cemetery Wednesday with Dennis-Green funeral home in charge. Rev. Oliver Robers of Bellwood officiating. Interment was in the Kisatchie cemetery with the Dennis Funeral home of Leesville in charge. Aunt Vic, as known by everyone was the wife of the late Ellis Taylor, brother of Mrs. Dan Robinson and the late Mrs. J. J. Key of Adantey. She was born and reared her family and lived there until her death. Aunt Vic had been ill for the past few years but was able to be up most of the time until a few weeks before her death. Since her husband's death Aunt Vic had make her home with her children. At death she was in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Newton Carter of Bellwood. Aunt Vic leaves three daughters, and one son, Mrs. Newton Carter of Bellwood, Mrs. Olla Melder of DeRidder, Mrs. Clyde Dowden of Peason, and Hardy Taylor of Kisatchie, a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her death.
