The Rev. James Miller officiated, assisted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial was at Converse Cemetery. Plans were under the direction of Drewett Funeral Home in Mansfield, La. Mrs. Gates, a resident of Converse for 27 years, died Friday, May 3, 1985, in Pleasant Hill, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Harold Gates of Coushatta, La.; her mother, Mrs. Lurline B. Free of Pleasant Hill, La.; four brothers, James A. Free of Pleasant Hill, Franklin Free of Sulphur, La., W. A. "Tim" Free of Orange, Texas, and Melton Free of Pleasant Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews.
