B. Gillis, were held in the Asbury Evangelical Methodist Church in Pineville, Louisiana, at 4:00 p.m., April 21, with the pastor, Rev. J. E. Kraus, and Dr. Guy Hicks of Alexandria First Methodist Church, officiating. Music was beautifully arranged by the choir director and organist, Mrs. George Huffman, assisted by Mrs. G. L. Malone, soloist. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Harding Lewis, and Leroy Roland of Alexandria, Lynn Bowman of Greenville, Texas, Bill Harris of Crowley, Ashton Phillips of Shreveport, and Jim Phillips of Hattiesburg, Miss. Mrs. Gillis, age 80, lived at 2242 Noble St. in Alexandria, having moved to Alexandria from Winnfield in 1910. She was one of the first two women to serve on a parish school board in Louisiana, first by appointment to fill a vacancy, then by unopposed election to the Rapides Parish board. Mrs. Gillis died in an Alexandria hospital, after a relapse from a heart condition, which first occurred about ten years ago. She is survived by two sons, David B. Gillis of Alexandria, and Anthony P. Gillis of Valparaiso, Florida; four daughters, Mrs. James E. Davis of Many, Mrs. Effie Gremillion of Shreveport, Mrs. Morrell Lewis of Alexandria, and Mrs. H. L. Hoffpauir of Crowley; two brothers, Marvin Phillips of Richton, Miss., and Arthur Phillips of McNeill, and Mrs. M. C. Phillips of Hattiesburg, Miss.; ten grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
