All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** The Sabine Index - Allerson Gandy 29 Jun 1934 - Allerson Gandy, age 19, was instantly killed at about 2:30 last Friday afternoon when a 2x10 piece of lumber 16 feet long fell 30 feet and crushed his skull while tearing down a derrick for Ben F. Smith on his Sabine Lumber Company NO. 1 test six miles north of Many. Roy Spears was in charge of the job of tearing down the derrick with Allerson Gandy, Kidd Kelly, Barto Gandy and J. W. Gandy as assistants. Allerson was working on the derrick floor while others of the crew was working on dismantling timbers overheard when the heavy timber slipped and fell, resulting in smashing the heard of the youth. he was rushed by his companions to the office of Dr. Robert B. Stille of Many but every trace of life had vanished, death having been instant in the opinion of the physician. "Boots" as Allerson was known to his friends, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. M. N. (Newt) Gandy of Negreet, was a graduate in the '34 class of Negreet high school, had just begun work in the oil fields and was making preparations to attend Louisiana State University this fall. He was a popular student and athlete, well known throughout Sabine parish as a bronc and steer rider, having ridden on numerous occasions at rodeos at the fair grounds in Many. Funeral services were at Beulah church Saturday p.m. being conducted by the Rev. J. M. Pate, pastor of Many Baptist church.
