Grappe was hit four times with slugs from a 32 caliber pistol. He was hit once in the stomach, twice in the chest, and once in the arm. Sheriff T. M. Phillips said Mowad and Buford Deers were preparing meat in a body shop, in preparation for a barbecue by the volunteer fire department of Many. Grappe, Phillips said, came into the shop, and an argument erupted over an invitation to the party. Grappe allegedly beat up Mowad, who left and returned with the pistol. Mowad told officers that Grappe again threatened to attack him, and was advancing toward him when he fired once. He said the shot failed to hold Grappe, and he fired three more times before Grappe fell. Mowad is at liberty under a $2500 bond, and a charge of murder by Joseph Grappe, bother of the deceased.
