Griffin Two Mansfield men were the victims of a fishing mishap mixed with bad weather on Toledo Bend Lake Saturday afternoon, at 4:30 p.m., according to Sabine Parish Sheriff, George R. cook. Odell Malone Sr., 52, and L. C. Griffin, 45, both of Mansfield, along with Andrew Lee Gillian, Malone's mother-n-law, were fishing for bream out of John's Landing near Converse, when a storm struck the area. The trio were fishing in a 14' aluminum boat on the Texas side of Toledo Bend, when the storm began causing choppy waves on the lake. They attempted to come back to John's Landing, but failed, Cook pointed out. "They made it about 150 yards from the shore, when their boat capsized," Cook explained. Mrs. Gillian hung onto an ice chest, which eventually blew into some dead trees on the lake, and was snagged. Mrs. Gillian was rescued some time later by a fisherman. According to Sheriff Cook, Mrs. Gillian last saw the men when they were behind her, struggling to reach the shore some 75 yards away. Neither man had a life jacket on. The Sabine Parish Sheriff's Dept. began dragging operations Saturday, but halted operations because of darkness. Both of the bodies were found on Sunday, by the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Dept. and volunteers. According to Sheriff Cook, approximately six boats, and 15 men joined in Sunday's search, until the bodies were recovered.
