Garner, 99, of Many, died Thursday, Oct. 23. The son of the late Mr. Jim and Nervia Garner, he was born on Nov. 5, 1875. He was converted at an early age, and joined the New Jerusalem Baptist Church, and remained a faithful member until his health failed. He was married to Miss Bettie Woods, and to this union 13 children were born. She preceded him in death, along with four of their children. Garner also married Lula Stallworth Fox, who preceded him in death. Survivors include four daughters, Gertrude Sweet, Iziora Pearce, and Nettie Morris, all of many, and Rainey Williams of DeRidder; five sons, John V. Garner, Francis Garner, Willie Garner, and James Garner, all of Many, and Rollie Garner of Dallas, Tex., one stepson, Ponder Stallworth of Greensboro, La.; one brother, 67 grandchildren; 56 great grandchildren; 25 great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives. Funeral services were held at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Lloyd Davis officiating. The Deacons of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers were his grandsons. Burial was in the new Jerusalem Cemetery, under the direction of the Jenkins Funeral Home.
