Katie, who was a former student at Many High, moved with her family to Deville in 1994, and was in her senior year at Buckeye High School. A native of Alexandria, she quickly endeared herself to the student body and BHS. She was a starter on the Lady Panthers basketball team, and also played softball, and ran track. An honor student, she was active in numerous clubs at BHS, where she was well liked. Students at both Many High, and Buckeye remembered their friend as an active, happy teen, who was always willing to help others. BHS seniors wore ribbon loops of green, her favorite color, on their clothing, with her basketball number imprinted on a blue circle. Under classmen also honored the teen with blue and gold ribbon loops, school colors. It was a somber group that converged on the Parkview Baptist Church, beginning before noon, Wednesday. Forty minutes before service time, at 1 p.m., the sanctuary was full, and people were directed upstairs to the balcony. Many had to stand for the services, due to the overflow crowd. Flowers flanked the closed casket, which was adorned with a floral arrangement, and her basketball and softball jerseys. A large framed senior portrait was also placed in the alter area, near her family, who were seated on the front row. Services began with the congregation singing "It Is Well With My Soul", followed by a moving solo, "Holy Ground" by Kim Soileau. Prayer was offered by Dr. Welby Bozeman. Ray Ford sang "Sweet Hour of Prayer", and the message, which offered comfort and love to those left behind, was delivered by church pastor, Dr. Joe Kite. He described Katie as a wonderful Christian teenager, who set an example to those around her. Prayer followed, and the congregation joined in singing "Because He Lives". Tears flowed, and young and old alike shared hugs, as they mourned the vivacious teenager, whose life was cut short by a tragic accident Monday night, Oct. 16. Burial followed in Roberts Cemetery in Forest Hill, with hundreds attending graveside services. A Katie Hebert Family Fund has been established, and contributions may be made to Unity Baptist Church, 6509 Magnolia Road, Pineville, La.
