Holmes Funeral services for Mr. John Lewis Holmes, 79, of Winnfield, were held on Wednesday, June 1, in the Southern Chapel, with Fr. Lee Humphrey officiating. Mr. Holmes died at 4:50 a.m., Tuesday, May 31, 1994, at North Monroe Hospital. Burial was in the Garden of Memories, Winnfield, under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Mr. Holmes was a native of Orange, Texas, and grew up in Monroe. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Holmes was a retired forester, and horseman, registered AQHA judge, a retired District Forester, and surveyor for Brown Paper Mill in West Monroe. Survivors include one son, Shove Holmes of Zwolle; one daughter, Charlotte Smith of Columbia, La.; four grandchildren, George Smith, John Butler Holmes, Harold Birdwell, and Rebeckah C. Holmes.
