M. (Pappy) Phillips. Rash has been released from Parish Jail, under $1,500 bond. The shooting took place Saturday, about 5:30, at the home of the girl, on the Sabine River in the Pendleton area. Sheriff Phillips gives the following account of the event: The slain victim lived with her stepfather, Joe Robbins and mother, Marie Honeycutt, on the R. D. Kirk place. Robbins told the sheriff that he had gone to Hemphill several times to talk with Rash about working on a car. Robbins said that Rash had shot at him several times previously. On the day of the fatal event, Robbins and the Honeycutt woman had gone to Hemphill to see Rash. About 4:15 that afternoon, Rash came to see them, apparently to talk more about repairing the car. Rash said when he stopped, the Honeycutt woman and several children came running toward him, and told him not to go to the house, because Robbins was going to shoot him. Rash said Robbins came on the porch with a shotgun in one hand, and a bottle of beer in the other. Rash said he turned to get in his truck as Robbins shot at him. Rash said he got his rifle from his truck, shot one time toward Robbins, and then got in his truck to leave. As Rash was leaving, Robbins shot at him several times. Buckshot hit Rash's truck, and also the old station wagon. And in the melee, young Brenda Kay was shot. Rash went back to Hemphill, and later told officers that he didn't know the young girl had been shot. When told of the event, he said he was sure that she must have been hit by a buckshot, not his rifle shot. Dr. Fred Thomas removed the fatal projectile from the girl's body, and it was the rifle shot. Robbins has been charged with aggravated assault, and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, and the Honeycutt woman has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Both are still in Parish Jail. Relatives of the other children, from Jena, have taken charge of them until the Court decides their fate. Funeral services for Brenda Kay were held Monday, in the Pendleton Assembly of God Church, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Barney Flanagan officiated, and burial, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home, was in the church cemetery. Survivors include her mother, Marie Honeycutt; two brothers, Carl, and Clyde Young; and three sisters, Alice Faye Honeycutt, Rose Marie Young, and Billie Elaine Young.
