Jones Two Singer, La. men drowned when the 12 foot boat they were in capsized, Monday, in Toledo Lake, near the dam site. The Newton (Tex.) County Sheriff's Dept. identified the two as John W. Jones, 51, and Ernest Lee Burgess, 35. Jones body was recovered Tuesday about noon, and as the INDEX went to press Wednesday, rescue operations for Burgess' body were still underway. The two fished together Monday, and the report that they had not returned to land was received at 1:39 a.m., Tuesday, by the Newton Sheriff's Dept. Red Williams, Commander of the Many Coast Guard Auxiliary, which is assisting in the rescue operation, said Jones' body washed up near the power plant on the Texas side. He was hanging onto a life cushion, Williams said. Williams said the Many Auxiliary had three boats, and Dr. Warren Founds' plane searching Tuesday, and the Auxiliary will have several boats searching each day until the other body is found. Others in the rescue operation are the Burkeville Rescue Dept., the Newton Rescue Dept., the Sabine River Authority, and game wardens for Jasper, Newton, and Sabine Counties.
