C. (Lum) Dowden, age 67 years, were held Saturday at 2:30 at Mt. Carmel Baptist church, Dennis-Green Funeral home in charge, interment in Mt. Carmel cemetery. Rev. J. P. Stockman and Rev. Monroe Roberts officiating. Pallbearers: H. A. Dowden, G. C. Dowden, C. H. Dowden, E. C. Dowden, Floyd Dowden and Clarence Allen Dowden. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Martha Dowden of Florien, route one; five sons, Hosea of Shreveport, Grover of Beaumont, Texas, Cullen and Eulon of Many, Floyd of Yazoo City, Miss; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Edmond Y. of Florien, W. C. of Alco, Monroe of Minden; five sisters, Mrs. F. H. Peterson of Hornbeck, Mrs. Lewis Monroe of Montgomery, Mrs. Hariet Walker, Mrs. Laura walker and Mrs. Emma Browning of Hornbeck. Mr. Dowden was stricken with a heat attack while visiting his son, Eulon, in Many Friday morning about noon. Sabine parish and especially the Mt. Carmel and Peason communities has lost one of their most beloved citizens, who will be greatly missed. ***************************************************************** Obituaries: Bernis S. SoRelle, Sabine Parish S-640 Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Jan 9, 1942 Submitted by: Tammy Larche-Smith tammy@cp-tel.net The Sabine Index - Bernis S. SoRelle 9 Jan 1942 - Bernis S. SoRelle, one of the southwest's best known oil men, passed away Sunday, Jan. 4. The son of Judge and Mrs. Don E. SoRelle of Many, he left his father's law firm for the oil business in 1910. He rose swiftly from oil scout to executive positions, during which time he live at Shreveport, Beaumont, Houston, Mexia and Fort Worth. At Beaumont he was assistant in charge of Gulf Oil company's land, geological and scouting department, from which he resigned to become general superintendent of the Invincible company (now Louisiana Oil & Refining company) and its Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma subsidiaries with headquarters at Houston. Sims Oil company next acquired him as general manager, at which time he lived in Shreveport. In 1924 he resigned to become general manager of Purl Oil company, living first at Mexie and later at Fort Worth. He retained this position until his retirement a few years ago. He was 58 years of age. He leaves his widow; three sons, Don, Layton and Jack; four daughter, Bernice, Marion Elizabeth, Martha Louisa and Patricia; three sister, Mrs. Milton Talbot of Leesville, Mrs. Claudia Cleveland of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Wm. E. Brogan of New Orleans; one brother, Andrew C. SoRelle of Houston, Texas; his father, Judge Don E. SoRelle of Houston, Texas. Funeral services were held at Cox funeral home, Dallas, Texas, at 2 p.m. Tuesday. ***************************************************************** Obituaries: Riley Martin Stoker, Sabine Parish S-326 Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Jan 30, 1942 Submitted by: Tammy Larche-Smith tammy@cp-tel.net The Sabine Index - Riley Martin Stoker 30 Jan 1942 - Last rites for Riley Martin Stoker, age 46 years, were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Cypress cemetery, near DeRidder, Dennis-Green funeral home directing and Rev. McCloud of Leesville officiating. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lottie Forshee Stoker, two daughter, Marie and Alice Jo, all of Leesville; three sisters, Mrs. Tim Lyddy of Many, Mrs. W. J. Greer of Pleasant Hill and Mrs. Kate Lawton of Alexandria; five brothers, Chris and Waler Stoker of Many, Allen Stoker of Provencal, Wallace Stoker of Leesville and Roy Stoker of Folsom, N. M. Mr. Stoker was born and reared in Sabine and reared in Sabine parish. He was a world war veteran. After the war he followed mechanical work until the last few years, when he devoted to farm life. Mr. Stoker was fatally injured on the highway near his home Monday night, Jan. 19. His sudden death was a great shock to his friends. May the Lord comfort and console his loved ones in this time of great loss and sorrow. ***************************************************************** Obituaries: Walter F. Woodle, Sabine Parish W-340 Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Jan 30, 1942 Submitted by: Tammy Larche-Smith tammy@cp-tel.net The Sabine Index - Walter F. Woodle 30 Jan 1942 - Last rites for Walter F. Woodle, age 29 years, were held last Friday at 2 o'clock at Little Flock church, Rev. W. G. Bailey officiating, Dennis-Green Funeral Home directing, interment in the Little Flock cemetery. Pallbearers were: O. R. Miller, W. K. Logan, Lowell Norris, Mr. Conly, Eddie McNeely and Cecil Davis. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Alice Speights Woodel of Columbas; one daughter, Elma Nell Woodel, age two years; father, S. F. Woodel, who made his home with Walter; one brother, J. W. Woodel, Negreet; two sisters, Mrs. W. M. Sims, Zwolle, and Mrs. Francies Williamson, Negreet. Mr. Woodel was killed last Thursday evening in a tractor accident while engaged in logging work. *****************************************************************
