Buvens 7 Jan 1949 - The remains of the late Lt. Felix H. Buvens and Pfc. Walter Earl Hubley will arrive by train at 4 p.m. Friday from Fort Worth, Texas and will rest in the respective home until the hour of funeral services 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at St. John's Catholic church. Final interment will be in the Catholic cemetery with military rites at the graveside. Lt. Buvens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix N. Buvens, a native of Many, lost his life Feb. 22, 1945 while serving with the Furth marine division on Iwo Jima. He attended St. John's school and was a graduate of Many high school. He enlisted in the marine corps in August 1937. Prior to the war Lt. Buvens served on the battleship U.S.S. Wyoming as a gunner. Following this assignment he was made a recruiter and served in that capacity until February 1943 when he entered officers training school. In the South Pacific campaigns, Lt. Buvens participated in the battles of Roi and Namur in the Marshalls and Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas. He was wounded in action on Tinian and was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart medal. He was 25 at the time of his death. In addition to his parents, Lt. Buvens is survived by his wife, the former Betty Gray of Rome, Ga., a daughter, Anne; two brothers, Francis and Norman, and a sister, Bobbie. Pfc. Walter E. Hubley lost his life July 23, 1944 while serving with the Third Marine division on the island of Guam. A native of Many, Pfc. Hubley was a graduate of Many high school He entered the service in 1943 and had served overseas about eight months at the time of his death. He was awarded medals of Merit and Purple Heart. He was 21 at the time of his death. Surviving Pfc. Hubley are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hubley; five brothers, C. J., Jr., Charles, Cleveland, Jack and Gene; seven sisters Mrs. E. P. Guidry, Mrs. Max Yarbrough, Mrs. Cullen Dowden, Mrs. B. W. Funeral rites were held at Noble Baptist church 2:30 p.m. Jan. 6 by Rev. Joe Flanagan of Shreveport, assisted by Rev. S. M. Mulley of Zwolle. Interment was under direction of Massingill funeral home. Pallbearers were W. H. Pearce, Kenneth Brown, Merton Neal. A. L. Neal, Ovie Bullard and Floyd Pearce. Surviving relatives are: wife, Ms. Geraldine Carley, Natchitoches, parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Carley, Noble; brothers, B. M. Carley, Odessa, Texas, J. F. Carley, Noble, Ray Carley, Odessa, Texas; sister, Mrs. Pauline Edwards. Deceased spent three years eight months in the army of which three years four months were overseas. He served in the Eight army air cops. Funeral services were conducted at First Baptist church, Campti, of which he was a member at 10 a.m. Monday by Rev. G. W. Reppond, Jr. assisted by Rev. John A. Walker. Mr. Corley was born and reared in Mt. Carmel community and has many relatives and friends in Sabine parish. He is survived by one son W. C. E. DeWitt 7 Jan 1949 - Funeral services for U. E. DeWitt, age 79 years, prominent pioneer citizen of Verda, who died at his home Tuesday, Dec. 28, after a brief illness were held Thursday from First Baptist church, Verda, with a former pastor, Rev. A. L. Russell, officiating, assisted by Rev. J. B. Herndon and Rev. Frank Israel. This beloved citizen was a charter member and a deacon of this church. Interment was in Mars Hill cemetery near Verda under direction First National Funeral home of Alexandria. Surviving are two sons, O. L. and A. A. McDonald, age 70 years, passed away at his home in Many early Sunday morning. He had been a resident of Sabine parish for the past 20 years. At the time of his death he operated the business known as Uncle Mack's Place. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Many Methodist church by Rev. Cleburne W. Quaid, pastor, assisted by Rev. Charles S. Miers, pastor First baptist church, Many. Burial was at Forst Park cemetery, Shreveport, Massingill funeral home of Many in charge. services were conducted by Rev. T. C. Pennell, pastor, Engelside Baptist church, Shreveport. Mr. McDonald was the son of he late Willard P and Martha Boyd McDonald. He was born at Center Point, Ark. Sept. 22, 1878. He is survived by his widow, Mary Minda McDonald; one daughter, Mrs. Seth Losey, Shreveport; two sons, Hugh and Harry McDonald, Many; two sisters, Mrs. Charles P. James and Mrs. Robert L. Gantt, Wilton, Ark.; four grandsons, two nieces and two nephews.
