The Sabine Index - W. E. Buvens

  15 Jul 1949 - W. E. Buvens was suddenly and fatally stricken
by a heart attack at his home in Many at 9:30 p.m. Monday.

  Funeral services were conducted at St. John's Catholic church
at 9 a.m. Wednesday with Father J. A. Benoit, celebrant of the
Mass. Rt. Rev. Monsignor John C. Vandegaer of Natchitoches
preached the sermon. Interment followed under direction
Massingill funeral home.

  Pallbearers were: Robert B. Jackson, J. Reuel Boone,
Harvey Skinner, J. M. Belisle, Ancil DeLatin, S. M. Taylor, A. P.
Store, J. M. Jordan.

  Surviving relatives include the widow, Mrs. W. E.
Buvens, Many; son, Louis Buvens, Sulphur; daughters, Miss Alene
Buvens, Many, and Mrs. M. M. Tatum, Atlanta, Texas; brothers,
Felix and Jim Buvens of Many and Dr. F. A. Buvens, Shreveport;
sister, Mrs. C. C. Marr, Mansfield, and 10 grandchildren.

  Mr. Buvens was a retired rural mail carrier, having
served from the Many post office for 29 years.

The Sabine Index - Mrs. Lottie Daughtery

  1 Jul 1949 - In memory of Aunt Lottie Daugherty. Mrs. Lottie
Daughtery was born Aug. 9, 1851 and died June 7, 1949 at the age
of 97 years, 9 months and 28 days. Funeral services were
conducted at 10 a.m. June 8 by Rev. Jerry Schmucker of Converse
and Rev. Nelson Mitchell of Many, with burial in Union Springs,
cemetery. She left her daughter-in-law Mrs. Ludie Daughtery, with
whom she had made her home, nine grandchildren, 10
great-grandchildren, besides a large number of relatives and

The Sabine Index - Mrs. Daisy Howard

  1 Jul 1949 - Funeral services for Mrs. Daisy Howard, 74, who
passed away at a Leesville hospital Saturday after a lengthy
illness, were held 3 p.m. Sunday from First Methodist church of
Zwolle with Rev. Jeff Holladay officiating, assisted by the
pastor, Rev. T. M. Lancaster.

  Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Annie Furr of Shreveport and a
number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

  Interment was in Zwolle cemetery under direction
Drewitt Funeral home, Mansfield.

The Sabine Index - Emmet E. Latham

  1 Jul 1949 - (The following account of the death of a native
Sabinian is taken from the Jasper (Texas) Newsboy of June 24.)

  Funeral services for Emmet E. Latham who died last Wednesday
evening, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon. June 16, at the
First Baptist church in Jasper with Rev. Herman Coe, pastor,
officiating. Burial followed in the Restland addition to Memorial
cemetery of Jasper.

  Mr. Latham was born June 6, 1880, in Sabine parish, La.
and was 69 years old at the time of his death.

  On Feb. 10, 1907 he was united in marriage to Christain
Russell and to this union were born one daughter and three sons,
all of whom survive their father.

  Mr. Latham had been active in the cattle business for
approximately 40 years prior to moving to Jasper five years ago.
Since moving her he has been semi-retired due to ill health and
for the past several months his condition has been considered
critical.

  Mr. Latham was a member of the Baptist church, having joined
that body 35 years ago, and before his retirement had been
actively engaged in church work and affairs. A number of
out-of-town people from Sabine parish and other places, who were
friends and relatives, attended the funeral services.

  Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Christian Russell Latham; one
daughter, Mrs. R. W. Perkins of Port Arthur, three sons, E. E.
Latham, W. A. Latham and J. L. Latham, all of Jasper; two
sisters, Mrs. Pearl Boyd of Converse, La., and Mrs. Modess
Springer of Baton Rouge, La.; one brother, A. M. Latham of
Mainesville, La.; and eight grandchildren.

  Pallbearers were: I. C. Davis, I. B. Bankston, U. E.
Dean, R. E. Smith, Carl E. Morgan, T. B. Walters, Gilbert Adams,
all of Jasper, and C. A. Lewis of Lafayette, La.

  Funeral services were under the direction of Stringer
funeral home of Jasper.

  20 Jul 1949 - R. A. McInnis, 67, passed away suddenly at his
home near Florien Wednesday of last week. Funeral services were
conducted at Prewitt's Chapel church at 2 p.m. Thursday by Rev.

  Mr. McInnis is survived by his widow; daughter, Mrs. C. N.

The Sabine Index - David Lee Sistrunk

  1 Jul 1949 - Funeral services for David Lee Sistrunk, age 74,
who died at Allen sanitarium, Converse, Sunday after a brief
illness, were held 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, from Mitchell
Methodist church.

  Mr. Sistrunk a progressive farmer, had lived in Mitchell
community for the past 67 years.

  He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Etta B. Sistrunk; four
sons, G. W., Dewey, John Floyd and James D., all of Mitchell;
three brothers, D. V. and T. M. Sistrunk of Mitchell and D. G.
Sistrunk of Converse.

  Interment was in Mitchell cemetery under direction of Drewitt
