Robert Donald Thaxton, age 20, U.S.M.C.R., was fatally injured in an airplane crash at Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Fla., May 17 and died shortly after. He was the sons of the late Barto and Mrs. Thaxton of Mt. Carmel community and graduate from Mt. Carmel high school in 1939, was president of his class and a favorite with all teacher and classmates. He attended L.S.U. 1940-41 before enlisting in naval aviation, took preflight training at Centenary college, Shreveport. He received his commission of second lieutenant in U.S.M.A.C.R., April 19, 1944, He was one of the highest ranking students throughout his training. He was located at Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Fla., for further training. He is survived by a brother, Raydon M. Thaxton, U.S. navy, Southwest Pacific; five sisters, Mrs. Wm. F. Fridell of Columbus, Ga., Mrs. C. H. Thigpen of Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. C. W. Davis, Mrs. Luther Byrd and Mrs. R. P. Corley of Florien. Funeral services were held at Mt. Carmel Baptist church Sunday, May 20, 10:30 a.m. Rev. O. C. Coburn of Florien officiating. Pallbearers were: Ensign C. W. Davis, U. S. N. Luther Byrd, C. H. Thigpen, Wm. F. Dr. Middleton was born Sept. 2, 1866 at Simpkinsville, Ala., and received his professional education at Southern university, Greensboro, Ala., and Vanderbilt university, Nashville, Tenn. Since coming to Many in 1890 he has been one of the leading physicians of northwest Louisiana. Outside of his professional duties he served as a member of the first town council; director of the first telephone company; one of the organizers of Many's first drug store and first bank, acting as vice president; was chairman of the local school board for a number of years, and president of Sabine parish board of health. He was a devout member of the Methodist church and Sunday school, serving as superintendent for 22 years. He was the last charter member to pass away. He was a member of Masonic lodge NO. 411, Many. On. Jan. 14, 1891, Dr. Middleton was married to Miss Lethia Smith, daughter of Senator and Mrs. J. Fisher Smith, who died in 1911. To this union were born seven children. IN 1914, he was married to Miss Clive Buvens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Buvens and to this union were born four children. Just two months ago, one son, Ensign William Fore (Billy) Middleton, naval air corps, gave his life in the service of his country. Surviving are: his widow, Mrs. Olive B. Middleton, and the following children: Mrs. W. D. Truluck, Arcadia; James M. Middleton, Jr., Waco, Texas; J. Selby Middleton, Alexandria; Misses Marguerite, Ruth and Leella Middleton, Many; Miss Elizabeth Middleton, New Orleans, and Charles T. Middleton, Baton Rouge. Mrs. Craig died at the Baptist hospital, Alexandria, after a long illness. She was the relict of Dr. J. W. Craig, Sr., of Many, formerly of Alexandria, also the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. Latham, relict of the late J. L. Latham, passed away after a long illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. O. Roberts, Shreveport, June 16. Funeral rites June 17. Aunt Jennie, as she was affectionately known by her friends, was a life-time resident of Sabine parish and a member of Noble Baptist church for many years. Funeral services was in charge of Drewett funeral home, Mansfield, conducted by Rev. Joe Flanagan of Zwolle at Noble Baptist church. Pallbearers were friends of the family. Surviving are two children, Rubin Latham and Mrs. W. O. Roberts, two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Nell Roberts; two sisters, Mrs. J. T.
