Cassell represents the dead man's children in the matter. Cassell said he is in the process of taking depositions from everyone who has any knowledge in the matter. Knippers died Saturday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m., in Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport, after being transferred from the Sabine parish jail on Friday, Oct. 25. Knippers was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 12 p.m., on a charge of issuing worthless checks, and lodged in the parish jail. After being held in the drunk tank, Knippers was treated at a Many hospital for delirium tremors at 1:30 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 25, according to Sheriff George R. Cook. After Knippers returned from the hospital, Sheriff Cook noted, one of the prisoners stated that he stood up on the bench in the cell and jumped off. Sheriff Cook continued, "About 20 minutes later, Knippers got back up on the bench, and dived (head first) onto the floor." The two trustees checked the man, and notified the deputies that Knipper's head was bleeding. Knippers was transferred to Confederate Memorial at 4:30 p.m., and treated for a head injury and delirium tremors. Hospital authorities were reluctant to keep Knippers, according to Sheriff Cook. Knippers body was exhumed early in November, at the request of Caddo Parish Coroner, Dr. Willis Butler, who performed an autopsy.
