Carl Allen Lilly, Sr., was born November 27, 1911, in Florien, Louisiana, to the parentage of the late Mr. Hillard L. Lilly, and Mrs. Avery Garner. He passed away May 14, 1986, at the VA Hospital in Shreveport. At an early age, he professed a faith in Christ, and united with the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Florien, Louisiana, under the leadership of Rev. J. J. Jones. He met and married the former Ida Belle Drew in Negreet, Louisiana, in 1942. To this union, one child was born. He graduated from Sabine Parish Training School in 1936. He taught school in Sabine Parish for several years, before entering the U. S. Army in 1942. After serving 3 years, 7 months, and 16 days, he received 3 decorations and citations; American Theater Medal, Good Conduct, and Victory Medal. He attended Leland College, and Southern University. He furthered his education at Bishop College, where he received his B. A. Degree; at Grambling State University, his B. S. Degree; Bishop College, his masters of Education. He was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Shreveport Bible College. He retired from the teaching profession, after 29 years of service in Louisiana schools. He was called to the ministry, and preached his first sermon at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, on July 11, 1948. He was called to pastor the Red Land Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for the past 32 years. He also served as pastor of the Bright Star Baptist Church for the past 8 years. Rev. Lilly was a member of both the Golden Rule Lodge No. 74, and Star of the East No. 48. He served as Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star. Rev. Lilly was more than a teacher and preacher. He was a friend to all men. He never met a stranger. He ministered to the sick, and visited the prisoners. He consoled the bereaved, and counseled the troubled. He probably joined more men and women in holy matrimony than any other minister in Sabine Parish. Rev. Lilly was a praying man - his prayers were for others. The names in his prayer book numbered in the hundreds. We rejoice in his home going. He leaves to mourn his passing, a wife, Mrs. Ida Belle Lilly of Florien, Louisiana; a son, Carl A. Lilly, Jr., Shreveport, Louisiana; two sisters, Nettie Miller, Willie M. Fox, both of Florien, Louisiana; two brothers, H. R. Lilly of Many, Louisiana, and Levoy Lilly of Natchitoches, Louisiana; daughter-in-law, Annie C. Lilly, and 2 grandsons, Roderick, and Chadwick Lilly of Shreveport, Louisiana; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
