Lowrey, 59, professor of history at Centenary College, died at his home Thursday, May 29, following a sudden illness. He was the uncle of Joe Lowrey, and Louis Lowrey, both of Many. Funeral services were held Saturday, in the chapel of Drewett Funeral Home in Mansfield. Dr. Lowrey had been associated with Centenary since 1963. He had recently completed a term as chairman of the Department of History and Government. A native of Mansfield, he received a B. A. in American History from LSU, Baton Rouge. He received his masters degree also from LSU, and his doctorate from Vanderbilt University. Before coming to Centenary, he was professor of history, and dean of Arts and Sciences at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux. He was a member of Omecron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, southern Historical Association, Louisiana Historical Association (serving as it's president in 1963-64), the North Louisiana Historical Association (serving on its board of directors), was a member of Historical Preservation of Shreveport, and was on the Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church. He had Also served on the Louisiana committee for the Humanities, and the Historical Study Committee of Shreveport. He received the Centenary College Alumni Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1966. He is survived by one brother, Jack Lowrey of Mansfield; and one sister, Elizabeth Lowrey of Mansfield.
