All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Otis McFarland Funeral services for Mr. Otis McFarland, 88, of Florien, were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10, 1996, at Antioch Baptist Church in Negreet. The Rev. Clennon Turner officiated. Burial followed in the Pine Flat Cemetery in Yellow Pines Subdivision, under the direction of Thomas Mortuary. Mr. McFarland was born on Aug. 28, 1907, in Columbia, the first of seven children, to the union of Steve "Bud" McFarland and Blanch Drew McFarland. He received his education in the public school at Pine Flat. At an early age, he joined St. James Baptist Church, and later transferred his membership to Antioch Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon until his passing. He was a member of Golden Rule Lodge #74 of the Masonic Lodge for several years. Mr. McFarland was an active member of a group of five men, who filed a legal suit, and forced the public schools of Sabine Parish to end segregation in 1965. Mr. McFarland married Tera Simmons, and to this union two sons were born. He leaves to cherish his memories, his sons, Otis Jr. of San Francisco, and Robert of Shreveport; three sisters, Adline McFarland Grant of Los Angeles, Algurita McFarland Kahey of Florien, and Creola McFarland Richards of Leesville; three brothers, Ovie McFarland of Florien, Wallace McFarland of San Francisco, Calif., and Melvin McFarland (deceased); five grandsons; one great grandson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
