Meshell apparently drowned when he fell overboard from a barge in the Intercoastal Canal. He was on duty on the barge, when the accident occurred, Wednesday night, Nov. 16. The barge had just cleared the last lock in the Calcasieu Locks, on the Intercoastal Canal. Meshell had evidently slipped or fell off the barge, for another deckhand was walking forward toward the tug, when he saw something floating by, that then submerged. The tug stopped, and a search began for the missing man. The search continued throughout the night, with the aid of the Calcasieu Parish Marine Division. Canal traffic was halted until shortly after 7:30 a.m., Nov. 17, Thursday, when traffic was permitted to resume.
