"Pete" McLean, 60, a man who educated students over the past 30 years, died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m., in Shreveport. Fondly referred to as "Mr. Mac", McLean had assumed duties July 1, at the School Board Office, after teaching and coaching in the parish schools for a number of years. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Esther McLean of Milam; his brother, the Rev. James Rayford McLean; and numerous friends. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m., in the Many First Baptist Church. The Rev. James Rayford McLean officiated. Burial was in McMahen Cemetery near Milam, under the direction of the Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Gene Wright, Joe Salter, Alfice Brumley, Larry Skinner, Bobby McDonald, and James Salter. Over 100 citizens, many of them educators Mr. McLean worked with, paid final respects to him. A great number of floral tributes were placed in the church. Many schools were closed Tuesday, out of respect for the deceased educator. He has been a well known figure in the parish for many years. Mr. McLean owned and operated a string of coin operated juke boxes in the area before entering into the teaching profession. In 1946, Mr. McLean, who had served a stint as a radar technician in the U. S. Air Force, began teaching and coaching basketball at Mt. Carmel. In the early 50's, he joined the Many High School teaching staff as basketball coach and commerce teacher. Mr. McLean, who had graduated from La. State Normal College in Natchitoches, was promoted to principal of Mt. Carmel School in 1954. He taught Business Education, and coached until 1965, when the schools were consolidated. McLean, who had, by this time, received his Masters in Administration from the University of Houston, taught Business Education at Negreet, until 1970. In 1970, Mr. McLean was named first principal of Many Junior High School. He served in this capacity until the summer of 1976, when he was promoted to the main office as Director of Title VII. A native of Natchitoches Parish, Mr. McLean had taught in the parish school system for nearly 30 years. He and his wife resided across Toledo Bend Lake in Milam, Tex.
