McWherter Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 23, at Kingwood Funeral Home, with Dr. Dearing L. Garner officiating, and assisted by Dr. Pat Carter. Interment followed Monday, Jan., 25, at 11 a.m., in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Mr. Clayton C. McWherter, born Dec. 16, 1916, in Many, was a testament to the Christian life, and the "American Dream". Clayton was a dedicated and devoted husband, father, friend, and business manager. "Mac", as he was fondly known in the "oil patch", attended Many High School. He began his career in the oil industry with the Texas Company, later to become Texaco. In 1946, he joined Johnston Tester Inc., later acquired by Schlumberger, in 1955. Mac rose to a position of Regional Manager through hard work, appreciation of his employees, and creativity. He was known for his gregariousness, fairness, and honesty. Many of the innovations in the oil field equipment designs were initiated by Mac and his associates in the "field". Mac retired as Regional Manager Gulf Coast (Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi). Clayton was an avid golfer and hunter, and never met a stranger. He loved his friends, whom he developed through the years. He was a Mason and Shriner in Louisiana, and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and Kingwood First Baptist Church. Survivors include his loving widow, friend, and companion of 64 years, Rita Brumley McWherter; two sons, Larry C. McWherter and wife Diane Chamberlin McWherter, and Ron C. McWherter; two grandsons, Clayton Blake, and Jared "Clay" Clayton McWherter; two sisters, Virginia McWherter Lott, and Mildred McWherter Hienz; and one brother, William Herbert McWherter Jr. Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by his mother, Vara Lites McWherter; father, William Herbert McWherter; and sister, Mary Lee McWherter Adams. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the loving care that Clayton received from the staff at the Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital, and Houston Hospice.
