The accident happened between 3:30 and 3:45 p.m., one quarter mile off the Jerusalem Cemetery Road. Malmay was employed by the Galco Co. of Zwolle, which was under contract to the Boise Southern Co., to plant pine seedlings. Galco is owned by Glenn Doyle Vines and Lester Norris, both of Zwolle. The two, along with John Britt of Noble, were working with Malmay when the incident occurred. Chief Deputy Alfice Brumley of the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Dept. made a thorough on-the-scene investigation. Deputy Parish Coroner, Dr. Warren Founds, pronounced Malmay dead at the scene, saying he had a broken neck and fractured skull in addition to other injuries. The body was removed from the scene by Raymond West of Warren Meadows Funeral Home of Many. Also at the scene were Bob Guillory, and Marion Tannehill of Boise Southern. The investigation showed that Malmay was riding on the tree planter being pulled by a D-4 Caterpillar, operated by Norris. It was working along side another unit, with Vines operating the caterpillar, and Britt working in the tree planter. The tree planter is made so that if a man who is working inside stays inside, he is not likely to get injured. It is assumed that Malmay stuck his head out the planter to look at Vines and Britt in the other machine to his right. Just as he did this, the planter he was on rolled by a large dead oak tree that was still standing to his left. It crushed his head between an angle bar on the planter and the tree. Norris commented that the four have been working together since the second week in December, and had planted over a million seedlings. "We only lacked 10 or 12 thousand seedlings in being through," he ended. Funeral services for Malmay will be held Thursday, at 10 a.m., in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Zwolle, with interment in the church cemetery, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Msgr. Robert C. Friend will officiate. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; a daughter, Lisa; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Malmay of Zwolle; six brothers, Gary of Zwolle, Ray of Bossier City, Dennis, and Michael of Shreveport, Thomas of San Diego, and Patrick of Houston; and two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Cooper of Converse, and Mrs. Linda Delaney of Shreveport.
