All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** James Larry Miller 10 Oct 1990 - Friends, relatives, students and fellow school board personnel are mourning the loss of an educator and leader whom Sabine Parish School Board Superintendent Larry Skinner referred to as one of the best elementary school principals in the parish. James Larry Miller, Florien Elementary School principal, died at the age of 43 Tuesday, October 2 in Schumpert Medical Center, where he had been battling will illness since mid August. Born September 2 in 1947 in Many, Miller taught school in Sabine Parish for nine years and at the time of his death, he had been Florien's Elementary School principal for 10 years. Under his leadership, at FES, the school maintained accreditation by the Southern Associating of Colleges and schools and achieved Instructional Model School status in the "Criteria of Excellence" program sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education. Also under his guidance, the students at Florien Elementary raised substantial funds each year for the St. Jude Childrens Hospital. HE was an active member of the Antioch Baptist Church having served as choir member, youth leader and in the brotherhood group. He was also a member of the Florien Lions Club. Services for Miller were held Friday, October 5 at 3 p.m. at the Antioch Baptist Church in Florien. Officiating was the Rev. Bill Murphy, Jimmie Evans and Kenneth Leach. Interment was in the Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. He was preceded in death by his father, Travis Miller, and his sister, Patsy Downs. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Miller of Florien; two sons, Brian Miller of DeRidder and Scott Miller of Minden; his mother Martha Miller of Florien and one niece, Tammy Thompson of Florien. Pallbearers were Buddie Calhoun, Dale Skinner, State Rep. Joe Salter, Ed Corley, Dr. David Law, Louis Slaughter, William Maxie and Wayne Lee. Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. Charles Black, Dr. Ben Quinney, Larry Skinner, Benny Knippers, Odis Faust and Sidney Lucius.
