Miller Jr., 47, of the Louisiana State Police Troop H, was killed instantly in a two car head-on collision on Highway 171, one tenth of a mile south of the Many City Limits. The collision occurred Thursday, Dec. 4, at 2:48 p.m., some 52 feet north of the intersection of the Lewingtown Road, and Hwy. 171. Seriously injured in the wreck was Gilbert Ray Self, 20, of Many, driver of the other car, and Miller's passenger, Roger Dale Wallace, 17, of Ft. Polk. According to Sgt. Stanley Cox of the La. State Police, Troop H, Sgt. Miller was traveling north on Hwy 171, at approximately 55 mph, in his State car. The 1969 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Self, was headed south. According to Sgt. Cox, the Self vehicle crossed the center line into the opposing line of traffic, and collided with the State unit. From the amount of damage done to both vehicles, it appears that Self was apparently exceeding the 55 mph speed limit. Self, an employee of Vancouver Plywood, was enroute to work. Both vehicles were totaled in the wreck. Sabine Parish Deputies, Chief of Police, Alfice Brumley, and several policemen, concerned citizens, and curiosity seekers stood around the area in stunned disbelief, as the victims were lifted from the wreckage. Sgt. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene by Dep. Coroner, Dr. V. M. John. Self, who was pinned in his vehicle, was pried loose, and taken to Many Hospital. After emergency treatment, he was transferred to confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport. La. Sate Police have been able to talk with Roger Dale Wallace, who was treated at Fraser Hospital, and then transferred to the Fort Polk Hospital. Wallace stated that he was walking on Highway 171, enroute to Shreveport, when Sgt. Miller stopped and picked him up, prior to the wreck. Following impact, Wallace, who had been thrown into the windshield, rolled the passenger window down, and crawled out. His door was jammed from the tremendous impact, according to Cox. Wallace was rushed to Fraser Hospital. He received severe facial lacerations around his nose, eyes, and forehead. It was reported that doctors put 128 stitches into his face. Self is presently in Intensive Care at Confederate Memorial. According to his family, he suffered a mangled right leg, a puncture lung, fractured skull, and serious facial lacerations. At last report, his condition was listed as fair. At present, no charges have been filed. According to Sgt. Cox, charges are pending further investigation.
