All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Mirdie Garner Martin Memorial services for Mrs. Mirdie Garner Martin, 95, were held Thursday, Dec. 7, at Swanson Funeral Home in Detroit, with the Revs. J. Green, and T. Robinson officiating, and again on Saturday, Dec. 9, at New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Many, with Rev. C. Rogers officiating. Interment was in New Jerusalem Cemetery, under the direction of Jenkins Funeral Home of Mansfield. Mirdie Garner Martin was born in Many, on Oct. 14, 1900. She was the youngest child of Louis and Harriet Garner. Mirdie had 19 brothers and sisters, all of whom predeceased her. Mirdie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was dedicated to her faith, and matured to a spiritual giant. Her strength encouraged all who knew her. Mirdie sang in the New Jerusalem Baptist Church choir for many years, and taught Sunday School for the junior girls. Mirdie married Jesse Evans Martin in the year of 1920. The were blessed in this union with five children, one of whom predeceased her as an infant. A lifelong learner, Mirdie loved education, and in all facets of her life, sought to improve herself. In her senior years, Mirdie pursued her dream of becoming an artist. Her paintings were featured with the local Art Guild. Her oil paintings are still on display in the homes of her family and friends. Mirdie's memory will be cherished by her four children, Jessye Mae, James, Harriet, and Gayle, as well as seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and eleven great-great grandchildren. Mirdie maintained a zest for life, love of God, and an indomitable spirit that influenced the community of Many. Pallbearers were Gary King, Robert Underwood, Willie Arthur Medlock, Fred Blinks, Jared Curry, and Carl McClanahan.
