All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Gilbert Martinez, Jr. (Photo) Funeral services, (Mass), for Gilbert Martinez Jr., 81, of Zwolle, were held Saturday, June 8, 1996, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, at 11 a.m. Interment was at St. Joseph's Cemetery, with Father Danny Walsh officiating. Mr. Martinez passed away Thursday, June 6, at Willis-Knighton Hospital in Shreveport, during open heart surgery. He was born May 2, 1915, in Zwolle, to the late Gilbert Sr. and Gertrude (Sepulvado) Martinez. He was baptized May 30, 1915, beginning his lifetime membership to St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He organized five usher committees, and headed them for ten years. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus. On Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1938, Mr. Martinez married Willie May Martinez. They enjoyed 57 wonderful years of marriage. Mr. Martinez was a veteran of World War II, serving in France and Germany, as a medical assistant. He retired from Willamette Industries, after 38 years of service. He always had a light hearted way of facing life, always with a smile or joke to help lighten everyone's burdens. His grandchildren say he was a fun grandpa. He enjoyed a close friendship with Gloria and John. John had just moved home, after being away 22 years. He is preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Martinez; three sons, Joseph and Glenn Martinez, and Larry Aaron. He is survived by his wife, Willie Mae Martinez; one son, John A. Martinez, both of Zwolle; one daughter, Gloria Sims of Eustace, Tex.,; one brother, Homer Martinez of Zwolle; eight grandchildren, Penelope Calhoun, Melanie Humphrey, Tammy Simpson, Kelly Blea, Corina Martinez, Laura Simpson, John Allen Martinez Jr., Glenn P. Martinez; one great grandchild, Adam C. Simpson; and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Ronnie Remedies, Louis Meyers, Harold Anderson, Jackie Craig, David Garcie, Ronnie Brandon, Jerry Ezernack, and Glenn Ebarb. Honorary pallbearers and ushers consisted of the Usher Committees, and Knights of Columbus, under the direction of Bill Anslinger.
