Dead is Glen Patrick Martinez, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Martinez. Dr. Lloyd H. Murdock, Sabine Parish Coroner, ruled the death due to accidental drowning. The youth, a popular member of the junior class at Zwolle High, and active in Catholic affairs in Zwolle, drowned in a deep hole in the river, as a classmate attempted to pull him to safety. The classmate, Steven Garcie, said Martinez was holding onto a stick, and Garcie, who is not a good swimmer himself, was swimming, and attempting to pull Martinez along, when Martinez suddenly let go of the stick and disappeared. The body was recovered about two hours later by City Marshal Quinton Brandon, who was diving in the rescue attempt, along with members of the Sabine Sheriff's Department, and volunteers. Martinez was secretary of the Zwolle High Junior Class, and had been re-elected to serve as secretary of the senior class of 1960-61, and had recently won the Future farmers of America speaking award. He was a member of the Sodality, the choir and the Catholic Youth Organization at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 21, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, at 9 a.m., with Rev. Father R. C. Friend officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, under the direction of Warren Funeral Home. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, John Allen Martinez; and a sister, Gloria Jean Martinez.
