The Sabine Index - Peggy Dean Dowden

  4 Mar 1955 - Funeral services for Peggy Dean Dowden, age 4,
who was killed accidently on the street in Many, by a truck,
Saturday, Feb. 26, were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 at
Pruitts Chapel with Rev. Owens of Hornbeck officiating. Interment
was under the direction of Warren Funeral Home of Many.

  Survivors are: Parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Dowden of Hornbeck;
brothers, Edwin Carl, Jerry, Gary and Roy Lee Dowden, all of
Hornbeck; sister, Patsy Jean of Hornbeck; grandparents, R. C.
Slay and Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Dowden, all of Hornbeck.

  Pallbearers: Bobby Jean Dowden, Billie Dowden, Glen
Craft, Barney Ray Cabra.

The Sabine Index - Mrs. Mattie B. Felts

  18 Mar 1955 - Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie B. Felts, 88,
were held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 4, in the Free Methodist Church
in Hemphill, Texas, with Rev. N. L. Dubberly and Rev. Clarence
Howell, both of Mississippi.

  Interment was in the Hemphill Cemetery under the direction of
Starr Funeral Home.

  Mrs. Felts was a native of Mississippi and had lived in
Sabine County since 1901. She was a member of the Free Methodist
Church. She became a Christian in early life and lived a
Christian throughout her life.

  Mrs. Felts was the widow of the late T. J. Felts who
preceded her in death, April 17, 1947.

  They observed their 60th wedding anniversary Christmas Eve,
1947.

  Mrs. Felts passed way Thursday, March 3, at 11 o'clock a.m.
at her home in Sabinetown. She became suddenly ill of a heart
attack and lived one week.

  She is survived by five sons, Lee and Walter of Sabinetown,
Clarence of Brookeland, Texas, Hugh and Urcel of League City,
Texas; four daughters, Mrs. Cleo O'Neal and Mrs. Ora Harper of
Sabinetown, Mrs. Opal Tinsley of Redding, Calif., and Mrs. Ocie
Gomer of Fort Worth, 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and
one great-great granddaughter; one sister, Mrs. Ella Patterson,
of Mississippi. All the children were present except Opal who was
not able to come.

  Pallbearers were: Howard Low, DeWitte Vickers, Austin Neal,
Alton Pratt, Preston Erwin and Edward Harper.

who passed away at her home near Many, Wednesday, Mar. 2, were
conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 3, at Fort Jessup Baptist
Church with Rev. H. H. Tibbitts officiating, assisted by Rev.
Earl Marr. Interment was in Fort Jessup cemetery under the
direction of Warren Funeral home.

  Survivors: Husband, R. T. Leach of Many; sons H. James,
Raymond, I., K. Emmitt, all of Many; daughters, Mrs. Martha Joe
Speight of Negreet, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnston, Misses Shirley Ann,

at the home of his brother, Henry O'Neal, Saturday, March 5, were

Interment was in Zwolle Cemetery under the direction of Warren
Funeral Home.

  Surviving Mr. O'Neal are: brothers, Henry O'Neal of Zwolle, C.

Tibbitts and Rev. Earl Marr. Interment was in Fort Jesup cemetery
under the direction of Warren Funeral Home.

Elmer and Chester of Shreveport; daughters, Mrs. Wilson Flanniken
of Many, Mrs. Amos Austin of Shreveport and Mrs. Ira Williams of

The Sabine Index - Mrs. Frank Russell

  11 Mar 1955 - Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Russell, 75,
who passed away at her home in Noble at 3 a.m. Sunday, March 6,
were conducted at Noble Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Monday, March 7,
with Rev. Frank Chance officiating. Interment was in Noble
Cemetery under the direction of Drewitt Funeral Home of
Mansfield.

  Mrs. Russell was born in Union parish May 4, 1879, the
daughter of William Henry Hamilton and Barbara Pearson Hamilton.
She and her husband, Robert Franklin Russell, moved to Sabine
Parish in 1900.

  Surviving Mrs. Russell are: daughters, Mrs. Ross Phares, a
teacher at Centenary College, Shreveport, and Mrs. L. J.
Anderson, Noble; sons, Leonard M. and Lennis H. Russell, both of
Herlong, Calif., sister, Mrs. Floyd Burns of Bernice; four
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

  Pallbearers were nephews of Mrs. Russell.

Mrs. Clara Sibley Funeral Services Held at Mt. Olive

Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Sibley, 86, who passed away at the home of
Mrs. Ed Shufflin Monday, March 7, were conducted at Mt. Olive Baptist Church
with Rev. Eugene Pharris of Princeton officiating.  Interment was in Jerusalem
Cemetery under the direction of Warren Funeral Home of Many.

Surviving relatives include: son, F. T. Sibley of Many; daughters, Mrs. Ed
Shuffling and Mrs. W. S. Davis, both of Many, Mrs. A. C. Phillips of Oak
Harbor, Wash.; brothers, Alex and Jack Small of Many; sister, Mrs. Lora
Jackson of Many; 34 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Pat Shufflin, Otha Shufflin, Murry Davis, Ralph Phillips, J.
B. Sibley and Robert Sibley.

Mrs. Sibley was born at Fort Jessup and has been a member of Mt. Olive Baptist
Church since 1901.

  18 Mar 1955 - Funeral services for Robert Reeves Tatum, 69,
retired lumberman who died at the Curtis Clinic in Mansfield
Friday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m. were held Saturday at 3 p.m. at
the Converse Baptist Church with the pastor, Rev. B. F. Worley,
officiating.

  Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Maude Taylor Tatum of Converse;
three sons, R. R. Tatum, Jr., of Shreveport, S. C. Tatum of Noble
and C. L. Tatum of Bossier City; two daughters, Mrs. E. A.
Hubier, Jr., of Converse and Mrs. T. H. Gregory of Mansfield; one
brother, J. Wilson Tatum of Mansfield; three sisters, Mrs. J. S.
Paul and Mrs. A. C. Johnson of Converse, Mrs. W. W. Strother of
Pineville.

  Mr. Tatum, a life-long resident of Sabine Parish, was a
member of the Converse Baptist Church.

  Pallbearers were: Z. F. Edwards, Floyd Sistrunk, W. A.
Oakley, Cecil and Hubert Brumley, all of Converse, J. C. Mulloy
of Noble, Freddy Hill of Mississippi and Willard Heard of
Houston, Texas.

  Burial was in the Sardis Cemetery under the direction
of Drewitt Funeral Home of Mansfield.
