The Sabine Index - Leonard A. Davis 
  
  21 May 1948 - Military funeral services were conducted at 
Belmont Sunday afternoon for Sgt. Leonard A. Davis, son of Mr. 
and Mrs. R. W. Davis of DeBerry, Texas. 
  
  Sgt. Davis was killed on D-Day, June 6, during the battle of 
Normandy. He was a paratrooper. 
  
  Surviving relatives include parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Davis, 
DeBerry, Texas; seven brothers, T. J. Davis, Carthage, Texas, M. 
E. Davis, Coushatta, Raymond W. Davis, Alabama, Bobby Davis, 
Montgomery, Eugene Davis, Logansport, Billy Ray and Orville, 
DeBerry, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. S. O. George, Shreveport, Mrs. 
Stanley Welch, Monroe. 
  
  The remains were brought from overseas and laid to rest in the 
family ploy in Belmont cemetery.

  The Sabine Index - Cindy Jones 
    
    7 May 1948 - Miss Cindy Jones, age 61 years of near Many was 
  laid to rest at Antioch Saturday. Funeral rites were conducted by 
  Rev. L. Green from the Baptist church there, followed with 
  interment under direction of Massingill funeral home. 
    
    Surviving relatives include: Sisters, Miss Bennie Jones, Mrs. 
  Mae Nelms, Mrs. Ida Nelms, all of Many, and Mrs. Susie Jones, 
  Negreet; brothers, Gabe Jones, Florien, Tom Jones, Port Arthur, 
  Texas, Sam Jones, Florien.

  The Sabine Index - Betty Salter Mandina 
    
    28 May 1948 - Mrs. Betty Lou Salter Mandina, age 21, died at 
  Fraser sanitarium Monday after a very brief illness. Funeral 
  rites were conducted at First Baptist church, Many at 3 p.m. 
  Tuesday by Rev. J. D. Scott, assisted by Rev. C. W. Williams and 
  Rev. Charles S. Miers. 
    
    Pallbearers were: J. T. Dees, Jr., Milton Hall, Ralph Ward, 
  Willie Williams, Keith Jackson, John Blake, Jr., and Jack 
  LaFitte. 
    
    Interment was under direction Massingill funeral home. 
    
    Surviving relatives include, husband, Capt. G. J. (Tommy) 
  Mandina, Camp Hood, Texas; parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Salter, 
  Many; brothers, Leon D., Shreveport, Ernest E., Eunice, Elton F., 
  Many, Norman, Eunice, James Kirk, Euncie; sisters, Mrs. Devonia 
  Willard, Cedar Grove, Mrs. Ruth LaCour, Oklahoma City, Okla., 
  Mrs. Leona Wright, Shreveport, Mrs. Georgia Gardner, Beaumont, 
  Texas, Mrs. Thelma Davenport, El Paso, Texas, Miss Exa Salter, 
  Beaumont, Texas, Miss Juanita Salter, Many; seven nieces and five 
  nephews. 
    
    Mrs. Mandina graduated from Many high school in 1944, then 
  attended Northwestern state college, Natchitoches, majoring in 
  physical education. She was married to Capt. G. J. Mandina, Son 
  of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mandina, Shreveport. The wedding took place 
  at Camp Polk.

  The Sabine Index - John A. May 
    
    7 May 1948 - Funeral services for John A. May, age 68 years, who 
  died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Winie Tims, in Coushatta 
  Monday, April 12, following a lengthy illness were held 3 p.m. 
  April 14 from Martin Baptist church with Rev. Jack E. Byrd of 
  Coushatta officiating. 
    
    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nora Williams May; four sons, 
  Melvin of Pelican, Robert of Noble, Fernell of Cedar Grove; four 
  daughters; Mrs. Laura Lummus of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Lena Butts of 
  Houton, Texas, Mrs. Ida Grantham of Noble, Mrs. Winnie Tims of 
  Coushatta; three brothers, Tom and Bill May, both of Cotton 
  Valley, and Britt May of Clarence; one sister, Mrs. Abbie Waters 
  of Gloster; 26 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 
    
    Interment was in the Hand cemetery near Coushatta under 
  direction Rockett funeral home of Coushatta.

  The Sabine Index - Herman M. McNeely 
    
    14 May 1948 - Funeral services for Herman M McNeely, S2c, 19, 
  were held at Pisgah Baptist church Saturday, May 1, with Rev. J. 
  B. Fortenberry officiating. The Leesville post Veterans Foreign 
  Wars assisted in the ceremony. 
    
    McNeely was the son of Mrs. Mattie McNeely, Toro community. He 
  was killed off Newfoundland coast Feb. 18, 1942. 
    
    Surviving are the mother; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Price, 
  Security, Texas, Mrs. Lois Fisher and Mrs. Wanda Phelps, Lake 
  Charles, and one brother, H. W. McNeely, U.S. Navy.

  The Sabine Index - Haywood Miller 
    
    28 May 1948 - Final funeral rites for Pfc. Haywood Miller, age 
  19, were held at Siloam Baptist church 11 a.m. Wednesday of last 
  week by Revs. Charles S. Miers, W. M. Ross, W. M. Greer, Cleburne 
  W. Quaid and W. V. Niell. Interment following under direction 
  Massingill funeral home. 
    
    Surviving relatives include: parents, Mr. and Mrs. George 
  Miller, Many; sisters, Mrs. Jerry Autrey, Morgan City, Mrs. Lee 
  Sibley, Boulder, Colo.; brother Chester Miller, Dallas, Texas; 
  three nieces and three nephews. 
    
    Pfc. Miller entered the marines in 1943, trained in San Diego, 
  Calif., served in the Pacific, N. Caledonia, Guam and Marshall, 
  awarded purple heart and expert rifleman's badge. He was killed 
  in action on Guam in 1944.
