Newton, 67, of Many, were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 7, 1989, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Officiating was Father Kenneth Williams, pastor. Burial was at the New Jerusalem Cemetery. Mr. Newton, a resident of Many, retired from the Baltimore City School System, as Departmental Head of Business, at Carver Vocational Technical High School. His career in education began as an instructor at Storer Teachers College, Harper Ferry, West Va. He spent several years working in the Library of Congress in Washington D. C. In 1952, he resumed his career of instruction in the Culpepper, Va. School system. He taught briefly in Pomokey, Maryland, the moved to Baltimore. He graduated from Sabine Parish Training School, and entered Southern University. Graduation from Hampton University in Virginia, he received the Masters Degree from New York University. During World War II, Samuel served in the United States Army in the South Pacific. He attained the rank of First Sergeant of Headquarters, and Headquarters Detachment 311, Quartermaster Battalion. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and served in various elective positions; president of his college chapter, president of several graduate chapters, Regional Director of the Eastern Region, and was elected to the Distinguished Service Chapter. He established a graduate chapter in his home district of Many and Natchitoches. He is survived by his two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn L. Bush, and Mrs. Goldie L. Parson; one brother, Donald L. Newton, all of Many; one brother-in-law, Arthur Bush; seven nephews; seven nieces; nine great nephews; seven great nieces; one great-great niece; and one great-great nephew. Pallbearers were Samuel D. Cross, George Shannon, Jerald Gant, Lutrill A. Payne, Lesil Mims, Grant P. Ford, Roosevelt Shelby, George Wilson, and Bobby Sewell.
