Newton, who was employed by Sam A. Rivers Sr., apparently cut a small tree, which became lodged on several sweet gum trees. Newton climbed up and cut another tree. When he saw the second tree was ready to fall, he backed out of the way. The small tree, which he cut first, fell and crushed him around the head and neck. Newton was found by co-workers several minutes later, and the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Dept. was notified. According to Sheriff George R. Cook, Newton was killed instantly.
