Loyed Ely Owens - January 7, 1988 Rev. Loyed Ely Owens, 78, of Many died at Sabine Medical Center on Thursday, Dec. 24, 1987, at 11:30 a.m. Services were held at Calvary Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Dec. 26 with the Rev. Bobby Dye officiating. Burial was at Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Rev. Owens was ordained as a Baptist Minister in 1938. Until his retirement in 1974, he served as pastor in churches in the parishes of Sabine, DeSoto, Vernon, Natchitoches and Concordia. He was associated with the Boy Scouts of America for 65 years, and was the recipient of his 50-year pin, the Silver Beaver Award, and the prestigious Good Shepherd Award. Only 13 other individuals, world wide, have ever been awarded the Good Shepherd Award. Rev. Owens was a member of the Kisatchie Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Mason, and a Shriner. He was a retired schoolteacher, having taught and served as a principal for many years in the parishes of Concordia and Sabine in Louisiana, and in Newton County, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lola H. Owens of Many; one brother, Leonard Owens of Hornbeck; one sister, Mrs. Rosa Lee Jett of Many; and a host of nieces and nephews.
