All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Lola Hopkins Owens (Photo) Lola Hopkins Owens, 90, formerly of Many, died February 9, 1993, at Parkland Hospital in Port Arthur, Texas. Services were held at Calvary Baptist Church, Many, Louisiana, at 2 p.m., on February 12, with the Rev. Bobby Dye officiating. Burial was at Antioch Cemetery, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Benny Funderburk, Joe DeBose, James Alfice Brumley Jr., David Barnhill, Bob Allardyce, and Paul Morris. Mrs. Owens was born in Grant Parish on July 8, 1902. She was the last surviving child of John Clem and Eliza Goree Hopkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Loyed Owens. Mrs. Owens worked for over 40 years for South Central Bell Telephone Company, beginning as a Switch Board Operator in the 1920's. She worked many years as the Chief Operator, and is remembered fondly by her former employees, as an administrator with a sense of humor and fairness, who set high standards for her operators. Mrs. Owens was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she taught a Sunday School Class, and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Sabine Telephone Pioneers. She supported her husband, the late Rev. Loyed Owens, in his years of work with the Boy Scouts of America. Mrs. Owens is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
