He was the elder son of Edward and Mary East Pugh. His father was an early victim of the "Lost Cause." But he and his only brother were fortunate in being reared by a saintly mother, who, under most adverse circumstances, gave him the advantages of an elementary education. But despite her heroic efforts he was forced to leave school at an early age, and engage in his first avocation, the surveying of mountain roads, a number of which are now used as the main thoroughfares. On January 1, 1880 he was married to Emily Tommie King, daughter of the Rev. Vincent and Mary Casper King. To this happy union six boys and three girls were born. The boys and their marital status is Tullis, who is married to Ruby Pullen; Eddie, a bachelor; Arthur, who married Ethel Armstrong; Quinton, who is married to Cleo Alford; Rex, married to Leonie Andries; and William Leonard. The last named died on Feb. 1, 1904, at the age of two years. He was also preceded in death by two other sons, Arthur passing away October 10, 1918, and Eddie was claimed by death December 22, 1933. The daughters, Avy and Ada, twins, married W. T. Gaddis and Cleveland Cobb, respectively, and Quillie married W. M. Caskey. All three survive him; and he is also survived by 14 of his 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Pugh emigrated with his family in January, 1905, and located on a farm near Fort Jesup, Sabine Parish, Louisiana; but after the children left the parental home to engage in the own chosen vocations, he and his wife removed to Many, where he lived until death claimed his faithful and loving companion on October 20, 1925.
