L. Dykes, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating, on Thursday, Aug. 8. Burial was in the Forest Park Cemetery. Peters died on Tuesday night, Aug. 6, at his residence in Shreveport, following an extended illness. The former owner of the Shreveport Sports, Peters had observed his 87th birthday on Aug. 3. Peters had served more than 40 years as chief scout of the sourthern division of Carter Oil Co., and was well known in the oil industry. Peters was the second man in the history of Carter Oil to achieve 40 years of service. He joined the employment of Standard Oil of New Jersey in the pipeline division in 1909. Peters, a native of Ft. Jesup, obtained his education at St. John's Catholic School, and Robeline High School. He was a veteran of World War I, serving with the American Expeditionary Forces during which time he organized a military baseball team. He also formed a baseball team in the early years of the oil fields in the Trees City area. Fellow employees who worked with Peters recalled that he was credited for scouting more than 5,000 wells, an average of one well every two days for 30 years. Peters also had said he had probably swapped information on 25,000 other wells. Peters gained recognition as an independant baseball operator, oversaw the planning for the construction of the present SPAR Stadium, helped Shreveport acquire a Texas league franchise, assumed presidency of the franchise, and was continually active in baseball. He always considered his baseball players as his own. Survivors include one nephew, John E. Hurley of Shreveport, and five nieces, Mrs. R. R. Lott, and Miss Nina Lee Hughes, both of Shreveport, Mrs. J. C. Mosley of West Tex., and Mrs. Peggy Lee Poole, and Miss Linda Irene Hurley, both of Houston, Tex. Pallbearers were A. L. Mazur, Sinclair Kouna, J. W. Jones, E. V. Joiner, Bobby Wilkins, Curtis Parker, and Dan Sawyer. Honorary pallbearers will be Cap Roberts, and Clarence Day.
