Powell, 78, of Pickering died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000 in Alexandria. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Feb. 19 at Cooper Baptist Church in Pickering with interment following at Toro Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Hackler and E. J. Bradshaw officiated. Mr. Powell was a native of Sabine Parish. He was a former woodsman and retired from Beauregard Parish School System, where he worked at Merryville High School and drove a school bus. He was a deacon at Cooper Baptist Church , a WWII veteran and a former deacon at Temple Baptist Church in DeRidder. Survivors include his widow, Mary Powell of Pickering; five sons, Jerry Powell of DeRidder, Francis "Fizz" Powell of Merryville, Thomas "Tom" Powell of Buna, Texas, Benard "Ben"'Powell of Daphne, Ala. and James "Rex" Powell of Huntsville, Texas; three daughters, Wannelle Jaeger, Mary "Roxie" Briggs and Bridget Hule, all of Pickering; two sisters, Maudie Canteberry of Florien and Zelma Lay of Texas; 18 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Mr. Powell was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Ann Powell. Beauregard-Vernon Funeral Home Leesville, La.
