(Pappy) Phillips, an outstanding citizen of Sabine Parish, and probably one of the most religious and genuinely loved members of the community, died at Fraser Hospital on Sunday night, Sept. 4, at 11:30 p.m. He was 77. Phillips, who served as Sheriff of Sabine Parish for 24 years, had gathered the respect of citizens in the area during his terms in office. A politically active man, Phillips was always willing to help people, and to be of service when he was in office, and following his retirement in 1968. Phillips, who was a member of the Many First Baptist Church, served as church treasurer for 38 years, and was a member of the Board of Deacons. He was civically active in all phases of development and growth in the parish. Funeral services were held at the Many First Baptist Church on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. Dr. Rod Smith, church pastor, and Dr. Kelly Fitzgerald of Baton Rouge, officiated at the services. Burial was in the Many Cemetery, under the direction of the Warren Meadows Funeral Home.
