All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Dr. Delores Payne Services for former Northwestern State University faculty member, Dr. Delores Payne, 72, were held Friday, Jan. 10, at 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Natchitoches, with Dr. Bradley Creed officiating. Graveside services were at 3:30 p.m., at the Crowville Masonic Cemetery in Crowville, La., under the direction of Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home of Natchitoches. Dr. Payne died Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Natchitoches Parish Hospital, following a lengthy illness. A native of Alexandria, she earned her bachelors degree at Louisiana College, and her master's degree at Northeast Louisiana, before earning a doctorate at Northwestern. She was the first woman to earn a doctorate at Northwestern. Louisiana College honored Dr. Payne as one of it's Distinguished Alumni in 1982. A distinguished Louisiana educator, Dr. Payne spent 27 years in elementary education in the Madison Parish, Monroe City School Systems, before joining the Northwestern faculty in 1971. While on the NSU faculty, Dr. Payne specialized in elementary education. She was the author of numerous research articles on the subjects of reading and individualized instruction. She also served as director of NSU's reading lab. Dr. Payne gave many professional presentations, including ones at the International Congress of Individual Instruction, and the International Reading Association. She retired from NSU in 1984. In addition to her professional activities, Dr. Payne served the community through a number of civic and cultural organizations, including the Association for Preservation of Historical Natchitoches, the Mental Health Association, PEO, the National Society of Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Natchitoches Northwestern Symphony. Dr. Payne was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Natchitoches. Survivors include four sons, Howard Devone Payne Jr. of Little Rock, Ark., Robert Charles Payne of West Monroe, Joe Beck Payne of Natchitoches, and Andrew Barber Payne Sr. of Many; her mother, D'Maris Beck of Alexandria; one sister, Lorena Beck Lymberis of Alexandria; one brother, R. Lawrence Beck Sr. of Alexandria; 12 grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Pallbearers were George Luffey, Arnold Kilpatrick, Jimmy R. "Chick" Childress, Joe Driskill, Sam Goodwin, Fabian Geisman, Everett "Sleepy" Reynolds, and Jim Bruning. Memorial donations may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, P. O.
