Pynes, 57, died December 31, in Portland, ending a career spanning 35 years in the western lumber industry. Pynes was Chief Quality Supervisor for WWPA since 1965, after holding a similar position with the Association's predecessor, Western Pine Association. Born in Peason, Louisiana, Pynes joined the Edward Hines Lumber Co., Hines, Oregon in 1936. He earned a lumber grading certificate, awarded for exceptional proficiency in 1940. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1943, trained at Washington State University, and emerged as a Second Lieutenant, and navigation instructor. After rejoining Hines as a lumber grader, he was hired in 1948 by the Western Pine Association, and was stationed in Klamath Falls for a number of years. He was named Assistant Chief Inspector in 1958, and Chief Inspector in 1961. He supervised 35 WWPA Quality Supervisors in the West. He leaves his wife, Edna, Portland; two married daughters, Nancy Warner, Las Vegas, Nev., and Susan Nelson, Portland; three brothers, Sam, Ed, and Roy, Eugene; one sister, Mrs. Odessa Presley, Salem; and four grandchildren. The funeral and burial were in Portland. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, Oregon Division, 1530 S.W. Taylor, Portland, Oregon.
