Supreme Court died Monday after a brief illness. The 72-year-old jurist has been undergoing treatment for pneumonia for the past two weeks. Ponder was elected to the high tribunal in 1936 and was re-elected in 1950. His 14-year term still had five years to run. Justice Ponder served 23 years on the High Tribunal. He was born in Fort Jesup, Sabine Parish, and attended Mt. Lebanon College, Tulane and Louisiana State. He was president of his graduating class at LSU in 1912. He practiced law in Amite until 1924 when he was elected district attorney of the 21st judicial district and in 1930 was elected district judge. Chief Justice John B. Fournet said of Ponder's death, " The people of Louisiana have lost one of their most dedicated public servants and the legal profession one of its shining adornments." Funeral services were held in Amite at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Amanda McMichael Ponder, three sons, Amos L. Ponder, Jr., George Ponder and John Ponder, one daughter, Mrs. Julia Deane; a brother, William A. Ponder, and several grandchildren. He was a cousin of Judge Wm. Ponder of Many.
