Pares, a longtime resident of Sabine Parish, passed away in a local hospital, Monday, Oct. 14, following an extended illness. Mrs. Phares was the wife of the late Dr. J. K. Phares, who practiced medicine in Vernon and Sabine Parishes for 51 years. Mrs. Phares was born in Sewanee, Tenn., Oct. 16, 1885, the daughter of George D. Gipson, and Margaret Gilliam. She and Dr. Phares were married Dec. 30, 1906, after Dr. Phares' graduation from medical school. Following their marriage, the young couple moved to Hornbeck, where Dr. Phares engaged to Negreet, where he continued his practice, and she taught music. She was a graduate of the Winchester Normal in Winchester, Tenn., her grandfather being one of the founders of this college. Mrs. Phares was one of the last survivors of the period, in the practice of medicine, that saw every baby born in it's own home, and the doctor gone for days at a time during an epidemic, to the age of penicillin, and gleaming hospitals. From the age when the doctor and his wife rode for miles on horseback during the night, he to administer his knowledge and skill, and she to be the nurse in some lonely farm home, to the speeding ambulance, and specialist in all fields of the practice of medicine. In 1924, Dr. and Mrs. Phares moved to Many, where they resided for the remainder of their lives. Survivors include three sons, Rose Phares of Houston, Glen Phares of Many, and James J. Phares of Downey, Calif.; one daughter, Edna Cole of Many; one sister, Mrs. Mary Webb of Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Oscar Gipson of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; several grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Perry Lassiter, and the Rev. James Skinner in the First Baptist Church of Many. Interment was in the Many Cemetery. Pallbearers were Reuel Boone, Jack Lucius, Horace Tompkins, Charles Williams, Less Jordan, and Harold Williams.
