K. Phares at the First Baptist Church in Many, Tuesday, May 2, with the Reverend V. R. Miller officiating, assisted by Dr. Kelly Fitzgerald. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Sabine Medical Association. Active pallbearers were Reuel Boone, O. E. Williams, LaVerne Daily, Horace Tompkins, Lee Jordan, T. M. Phillips, Jack Lucius, and Elden Dees. Dr. Phares practiced medicine for forty six years in Vernon and Sabine Parishes. He started practicing medicine at Hornbeck in 1906, and moved to Negreet in 1909. In 1925, he moved to Many to practice medicine, and be coroner for Sabine Parish. Dr. Phares was born in Sugar Town in Beauregard Parish, March 31, 1882. His parents moved to Mt. Carmel in Sabine Parish, while he was an infant. He attended the grade school there, and obtained his high school education at the Fort Jesup Academy. He finished medical school at the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. Between terms of medical school, Dr. Phares taught school in the Middle Creek Community, Sabine Parish. He was coroner of Sabine for 28 years, and Parish Health Officer for 12 years. In 1943-44, he served as Sheriff of Sabine Parish, filling the unexpired term of D. J. Derrick, who died while in the sheriff's office. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Many, and a Master Mason. He is survived by his wife, Sally Gipson Phares. They were married in Winchester, Tenn., in Dec. 1906. His other survivors are sons, Ross, Glen, James; and a daughter, Edna Cole. He has seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
