Rivers, 43, of Shreveport, was shot and killed in a Shreveport lounge, early Sunday morning, Oct. 16, according to Shreveport police. Rivers, who was a native of Sabine Parish, had resided in Shreveport for the past 27 years. He was a member of the St. Catherine Church of Shreveport. According to the reports, Rivers was shot and killed by a gunman, angered by a second patron in the East 70th Street lounge, known as Betty's Lounge. Police detectives said Rivers died after being shot once in the chest. The shooting occurred about 12:45 a.m. Witnesses told police Rivers was shot by an unidentified man who kicked open the bar's front door, and fired one time, with a small caliber pistol. The gunman, who ran from the scene, reportedly also fired shots at his pursuers, witnesses said. Police were told the suspect had been hit in the face by a second bar patron before the shooting. He returned a few minutes later to fire once into the bar, witnesses said. According to police, Rivers was shot in the front of the lounge, and ran into a rear bathroom, where officers found him dead. The suspect was described as a black male in his early 20's, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and 145 pounds. No arrest has been made in connection with the shooting. Funeral services for Rivers were held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m., with Father Patrick A. Scully officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jodie Rivers of Shreveport; a sister, Mrs. Jo Anne Anderson of Stonewall; and two brothers, Jacky Rivers of Oil City, and Buster Rivers of Shreveport.
