All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Duke Roberts Duke Roberts, 95, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He was born Nov. 9, 1905, in Llano, Texas, to Myrtle and Arthur Roberts, the eldest of six children. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., at Beal Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include his son, and daughter-in-law J. Duard and Essie Anderson Roberts; three grandchildren, Rhonda Clark, Buddy Roberts, and Lori Moore; four great grandchildren, Karrie Delise, Jason Roberts, Jeff Roberts, and Katie Moore. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his wife, Irene T. Roberts; four brothers, Arthur, Ernest, Garland, and H. T. "Sonny" Roberts; and one sister, Virginia Joyner. Mr. Roberts was a retired Major in the Louisiana East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office. In addition to his duties as a civil deputy, he also served as a liason officer for the Sheriff, and the Baton Rouge Flotilla. In 1923, at the age of 18, he served as a member of Company H, 144th Infantry of the National Guard at Austin, Texas. Prior to moving to Baton Rouge in 1941, he and his family lived in Shreveport, and Centralia, Wash. During the 1940's he owned and operated Duke's Cake Shop, Duke's Doughnut Shop, and Baton Rouge Cooks and Bakers School, all located in Baton Rouge. After retirement from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's office in 1972, he moved to Toledo Bend Lake near Many, where he remained for 25 years. He was an avid Louisiana sportsman and fisherman, supporting many organizations and groups that enhance these activities, including Ducks Unlimited, and many others. He was a 32nd degree Shriner, maintaining a membership with the Capitol Masonic Lodge No. 399 in Baton Rouge for over 50 years. He moved to Destin, Fla., with Irene T. Roberts, his wife of 70 years, in 1997, to be with his son, J. Duard Roberts and his family. In Lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
